Chief Technology Officer

The ideal candidate will be experienced leading development at consumer internet startups, be passionate about well-being and the use of social media for personal growth, have a knowledge of e-learning and be ready to change the world.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Interface with the content team to build upon Thrive Research’s e-learning network. Focus on reliable, scalable systems.
  • Define and evangelize technical vision, strategy and roadmap. Ensure that our products are market-driven, engaging and effective.
  • Lead Thrive Research’s development. Be hands-on and still coding… but be prepared to grow your team aggressively.
  • Collaborate with top academic researchers at Stanford University and other institutions to refine our vision and define effective solutions.
  • Envision the use of technology - including AI, NLP, games and interactive media – to enhance feedback, engagement and value.
  • Drive the development of engineering plans derived from product requirements. Coordinate the efforts of the local and offshore development teams. Manage projects incorporating lightweight processes and agile team development.
  • Manage website operations and availability.
  • Work with the CEO and other executive team members to identify and develop strategic alliances, raise venture/public/partner financing, communicate with the Board of Directors and close/grow major customer accounts.
  • Engage closely with customers and internal teams - Product Management, Content & Research, Client Services and Support.
  • Develop and manage the Company’s software development budget.
  • Design and track operational and quality metrics, along with success criteria for development and website operations.
  • Hit deadlines, both on time and on budget.


  • MSCS degree from a top university. Strong business acumen.
  • Customer and executive presence.
  • Successful start-up experience as a CTO or leading development in a consumer internet company, preferably e-learning, social networking, or health 2.0.
  • 10+ years experience, at least 5 of them at a consumer internet company.
  • Experience operating highly available, scalable websites. SaaS experience preferred.
  • Exceptional technical understanding of internet technologies, commercial Web site operations, content management and portal design.
  • Exceptional communicator with the ability to lead and inspire.
  • Experience growing and building engineering teams; able to manage rapid growth.
  • Passionately focused on the consumer as customer.
  • Highly motivated and aggressive, with a can-do attitude.
  • Track record of delivering world-class products.
  • Experience developing technical development roadmaps to support growth.
  • Strong knowledge of privacy, ethics and HIPAA practices and procedures.
  • Willing to work for primarily equity-based compensation until outside funding is secured.
